Productivity and Job Loss
Weighing Productivity and Job Loss:
The first large-scale study of a ChatGPT-like AI assistant in the workplace revealed a surprising trend
Conducted on nearly 5,200 customer support agents at a Fortune 500 software firm
Findings:
positive outcomes 📈 across the board such as increased productivity, happier customers, and higher employee retention
Workers who utilized the tool were 14% more productive
Junior employees who utilized the tool were up to 35% more productive
Why this Matters:
Leveling the Playing Field: Contrary to fears of exacerbating inequality, AI is offering the biggest leg up to those traditionally lagging behind in the digital economy
This study highlights a shift from digital technologies only benefiting higher-skilled workers to aiding those less-skilled
For most of the past 30 years, computers and digital technologies have helped higher-skilled workers more than less-skilled workers.… It was fascinating to see that this technology goes the other way around.
There has been: a broad-based fear that AI will displace a certain portion of lower-skill workers but it may, in fact, enhance their capabilities making them far more productive
leading to increased economic growth and perhaps creating a more level playing field.
