And "a smarter way to streamline drug discovery"

No hype. No doom.

Just actionable resources and strategies to accelerate your success in the age of AI

Today’s Story

The FDA has noted a significant uptick in drug and biologic application submissions that incorporate AI/ML, in recent years with over 100 in 2021 alone.

Most recently "MIT researchers developed an algorithmic framework to automatically identify optimal molecular candidates (for drug development,) which minimizes synthetic (or lab creation) cost while maximizing the likelihood that (molecular) candidates have desired properties."

The SPARROW algorithm, in other words, picks the best molecules before they need to be created in a lab, preselecting for optimal desired properties.

SPARROW—Synthesis Planning and Rewards-based Route Optimization Workflow—uses a quantitative approach to optimize molecular candidate selection, while considering both cost and property likelihood.

Drug discovery is shifting towards Algorithmic Decision Making. A future will exist when drugs can be programmed and tested all via computer.

Headlines

  • Microsoft' Peers Into OpenAI Codebase (SF) - “Microsoft… has intellectual property rights to OpenAI’s software as part of its multibillion-dollar investment” and “Mustafa Suleyman, has been doing the unthinkable: looking under the hood at OpenAI’s crown jewels — its secret algorithms behind foundation models like GPT-4,”

  • Google’s Pixel update brings Gemini AI (VR) - Apple Intelligence: now there will be Google Intelligence native to Android?

  • McDonald’s Pauses AI ordering System (TH)- “While there have been successes to date, we feel there is an opportunity to explore voice ordering solutions more broadly.”

Vulnerability in Text-to-Image Models

  • A study, conducted by the Department of Computer Science at the University of Chicago, investigated the vulnerability of text-to-image generative models to prompt-specific poisoning attacks.

  • Multiple Nightshade attacks (a form of data poisoning specifically designed to disrupt generative AI models ) can be linked together, and even a moderate number of attacks can destabilize general features in a model, like disabling its ability to generate meaningful images altogether.

  • The researchers have called for continued research into understanding the theoretical underpinnings of the observed behavior as well as the development of more robust detection and mitigation strategies.
