The Medicine + AI Code of Conduct
As we have written about before medicine is changing because of AI:
Drug Discovery
Diagnostics
Healthcare Delivery
Are all rapidly evolving with new technology,
Like Deepmind releasing a model that is “fine-tuned…to predict which misspellings found in human DNA are safe to ignore and which are likely to cause disease.” - Per MIT
In light of this rapid change, the National Academy of Medicine has:
Released a Draft AI Code of Conduct:
It identifies three main areas of concern: inclusive collaboration, ongoing safety assessment, and efficiency or environmental protection
The framework outlines 10 code principles and six code commitments to guide behavior in complex systems and aid in decision-making, aiming to minimize risks such as misdiagnosis, privacy breaches, and workforce displacement.
The National Academy of Medicine encourages public input on the draft until May 1
The final framework will include trials through case studies, input from various stakeholders, including patient advocates, health systems, and government agencies.
“Given the increasing use of AI in healthcare and biomedical science, and the concomitant concerns about risks and potential harm, careful review, application and continual development of best practices is essential to maximize benefit and mitigate harm.”
