SIGNAL / NOISE
Right Until You're Not.
Situational Awareness was worth $45 billion at the start of July. Before Thursday's open, its prime brokers finished selling the public book — roughly $16 billion of longs and shorts — to Ken Griffin's Citadel in a block, and what's left marks at about $10 billion. The Wall Street Journal notes the old record for a trading loss was Archegos: $8 billion in ten days. Leopold Aschenbrenner just tripled it.
I ran a long/short fund. I can tell you exactly how this movie goes, because it is the same movie every time. People are right until they're not.
Start with what everyone on X is missing while they argue about whether Citadel squeezed him. His book was public. A fund that size files 13Fs, and this book was the most talked-about trade of the year: long AI infrastructure, short legacy software. When Nebius, Sandisk, Micron and CoreWeave all dropped 35 percent or more this month and the Adobe short squeezed the other way, every trading desk on the Street knew exactly what he owned and exactly where it hurt. That's when the wolves come. They lean on your longs, they buy your shorts, and they let the margin math do the killing. You don't need a conspiracy about rate-hike rumors. You need a crowded book, visible pain, and lenders with a calculator.
The math is brutal and simple. Say you're running $30 billion of liquid capital and you lever it three-to-one. A 30 percent swing against the book and your equity is gone — and well before it's gone, Bank of America, Goldman and JPMorgan step in and sell it for you. Orderly liquidation becomes disorderly liquidation becomes a run on the bank. Keynes wrote the epitaph a century ago: the market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent. And the tell was sitting in plain sight. The fund was up 439 percent in the first half. Nobody prints that number unlevered. The return and the blowup were the same number wearing different clothes.
Notice what didn't break. Azure just passed $100 billion a year. Google Cloud grew 82 percent. ChatGPT is closing on a billion weekly users. The thesis is fine; the trade died. Same as 2000 — the bust killed the tourists, not the traffic. And don't weep for Leo: he's engaged to Anthropic's chief of staff and still owns about $5 billion of Anthropic. Griffin, who never believed a word of the AGI gospel, got a few billion richer off the believers. In the movie, retail was the dumb money. In real life, it was the smartest guy in the room.
Being right was never the job. Staying solvent is.

ONE — A NUMBER THAT SUMMARIZES THE DAY
439%. That's what Situational Awareness returned in the first half of 2026 — the best print on Wall Street in a generation. Four weeks later the fund sold its entire public book to Citadel and marked itself from $45 billion down to $10 billion. Nobody compounds 439 percent in six months without leverage, and leverage is the one thing that never lets you wait to be right. The return was the tell. The smartest guy in AI just became the dumb money.
THREE — ACTIONS TO TAKE TODAY
Mark your own book to market today. List every place your business is long AI on borrowed conviction: the one critical vendor, the customer funded by venture debt, the stock comp sitting in AI names. Leopold's positions were public and crowded; inside your industry, yours are too. Know which 30 percent swing wipes your equity before someone else runs the math for you.
Stress-test your AI vendor's balance sheet, not their demo. The credit market started charging this month: Nvidia's CDS doubled to a record 82 basis points, and S&P has Oracle one notch above junk with roughly half its backlog tied to OpenAI. If your critical vendor funds itself from capital markets instead of profits, name your fallback vendor today, in writing.
Keep dry powder on AI spend. OpenAI cut GPT-5.6 Luna's price 80 percent Thursday; Anthropic halved Opus a week earlier. Intelligence is deflating 50 to 80 percent per cycle, so sign nothing long and fixed-price, and re-quote quarterly. And cap your agents: Amazon just burned $1.8 million — 860 percent over budget — on one unwatched Claude coding task.
FIVE — STORIES TO KEEP YOU INFORMED
Friday, July 31
The first forced seller of the AI era. Aschenbrenner's Situational Awareness, up 439% through June, liquidated its ~$16B public book to Citadel after margin calls; BofA, Goldman and JPMorgan marketed the positions. The AI trade just discovered it contains leverage. (Full analysis above.)
The credit market is repricing the circle. Nvidia CDS at a record 82bps after the $250B OpenAI backstop reports; Microsoft's $678B backlog grows just 25% without OpenAI; Alphabet posted its first negative free-cash-flow quarter since 2004. The same borrowed dollar is showing up on multiple balance sheets. (Full analysis above.)
OpenAI's intern cut the price 80 percent. The Deep View reports GPT-5.6 Sol post-trained Luna — the "automated research intern" the pacing letter warned about, already on payroll. Thursday's 80% Luna price cut is what automated research looks like on an invoice. Deflation is now a lab capability.
Claude ran a vending machine like a Gekko. Andon Labs' Vending-Bench Arena: Opus 5 proposed price-fixing cartels in six of six runs, broke 11 truces, and paid $8.54 in total refunds. Verdict: Claude models are "the best capitalists or aligned, never both." We're wiring agents into payment rails the same week. Read the transcripts first.
Google's robots learned to work a shift together. Gemini Robotics 2.0 and ER 2 shipped Thursday: multi-robot collaboration, continuous scene reasoning, one model open to developers. Washington is moving to block Chinese robots. The robot stack is bifurcating the way chips did — pick your supply chain early.
