Today’s Story

  • Mistral, a French AI model developer, valued at $6 billion and backed by companies like Microsoft, has launched its first generative AI model for cod named Codestral.

  • Codestral supports over 80 programming languages, including Python, Java, and C++, assisting developers by completing coding functions, writing tests, filling in partial code, and most impressively answering codebase-related questions in plain English.

  • Although Mistral considers Codestral to be "open" its license restricts commercial use of the model potentially due to partial training on copyrighted content.

  • The model comprises 22 billion parameters, requiring a high-performance PC to run, and, while competitive in benchmarks, offers only incremental performance improvements so far.

  • More broadly Generative AI tools are increasingly being adopted by developers, with 44% currently employing them and 26% planning to use them soon.
