AI threatens to automate half of all jobs that don't require a 4-year degree

Business automation powered by AI is going to hyper-change how we all work.

This a AI tech boom is just getting going and many big businesses are going to make automation a key strategic goal. This will trigger a lot new work people that are AI trained, but the net effects of AI automation is going shut down jobs that are gateway jobs for racial minorities. You can read the full McKinsey & Company report: The impact of generative AI on Black communities, but have summarized it for you.

The recent McKinsey report didn’t shock us, but it did put a lot of data for us to consider:

  • AI threatens to automate half of all jobs that don't require a 4-year degree and that pay over $42,000 a year, which they define as the threshold for building wealth.

  • The researchers concluded that the workers most at risk are in office support, production (e.g. machinists) and food services

  • Between 2030 and 2060, gen AI may be able to perform about half of the gateway or target jobs that many workers without degrees have pursued—closing a pathway to upward mobility that many Black workers have relied on

  • Outsized negative impact of AI automation on Black workers because they’re overrepresented in key job segments where AI automation will start.

What To Do:

  • Make yourself ready for the AI revolution is now and we are recommending everyone to become AI literate as fast as they can.

  • The rapidly expanding scope of what gen AI can do—both now and in the near future—means that workers must pivot from future-proof jobs.
