The COAI team is tracking every OpenAI launch of their 12-day series

Day five: OpenAI has launched ChatGPT integration across Apple devices, allowing users to access ChatGPT through Siri, writing tools, and camera controls on iPhone, iPad, and Mac OS. The integration enables users to invoke ChatGPT directly from the operating system, with features including document analysis, visual intelligence for camera-captured images, and seamless conversation continuation between devices. Users can enable the feature through Apple Intelligence settings and use ChatGPT either anonymously or with an account, making the AI assistant more accessible and frictionless across Apple’s ecosystem.

DeepMind alumni lead Microsoft's medical AI push as healthcare tools multiply

Microsoft's formation of a new healthcare AI unit in London, led by former Google DeepMind executives, signals the start of what promises to be an intense year of AI healthcare developments. Dominic King, who previously led DeepMind’s health unit, has been appointed as vice-president of Microsoft AI’s new health team. They will focus on developing practical medical applications, joining a crowded field of both tech giants and startups rushing to deploy AI in clinical settings.
Mixed results from the field
A groundbreaking real-world trial by French health insurance company Alan provides a sobering look at AI's current capabilities in healthcare. While users reported high satisfaction with Alan's medical chatbot, researchers identified potentially dangerous inaccuracies. This mirrors broader challenges in healthcare AI deployment.
Stanford researchers appear to recognize these challenges. Their newly developed Fair, Useful, and Reliable AI Models (FURM) framework aims to help healthcare providers systematically evaluate AI technologies before implementation. This structured approach could prove crucial as the field rapidly evolves.
Specialized applications show promise
Not all healthcare AI developments focus on core medical functions. Honda's AI-powered robot Haru, deployed in Spain's Virgen del Rocio hospital, demonstrates how emotional support and social connection can be enhanced through technology. The 11-inch tall "social bot" analyzes facial expressions and voice tones to support young cancer patients during treatment.
Meanwhile, scientists at the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi are using AI to tackle aging itself. Their platform AgeXtend has analyzed over 1.1 billion compounds to identify potential anti-aging substances, with early validation in human cells and model organisms.
Looking ahead
The healthcare AI landscape is rapidly evolving, but success will require more than just technological innovation. As Large Language Models merge with autonomous agent systems, healthcare providers face complex decisions about implementation, validation, and the optimal balance between human and artificial intelligence.
