The COAI team is tracking changes in AI and tech regulation

The U.S. House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence has released a bipartisan 253-page report outlining 66 findings and 89 recommendations for AI policy and regulation, covering areas from government applications to civil rights protections. The report, led by Representatives Jay Obernolte and Ted Lieu, advocates for standardized AI practices across government agencies, expanded DoD AI training, technology-neutral privacy legislation, and support for AI literacy programs in education. The task force recommends an incremental approach to regulation that prioritizes human oversight while maintaining flexibility for technological advancement, with specific guidance for sectors including healthcare, defense, and small businesses.

What’s happening in AI right now

A generational shift in creativity is remaking everything from art installations to music production

Times Square's latest canvas

Laurie Simmons' groundbreaking "Autofiction: Moving Pictures" installation across 92 electronic billboards in Times Square marks a watershed moment in digital art. The renowned artist's use of multiple AI platforms to generate and refine images of women in color-coordinated rooms demonstrates how leading creatives are beginning to embrace AI as a complementary tool rather than a replacement. This massive public display represents more than just technological prowess - it shows how AI can amplify rather than diminish artistic vision.

The music industry's great experiment

The creative industries are rapidly discovering unique ways to incorporate AI while preserving human artistry. Paul McCartney and The Beatles' Grammy-nominated track "Now and Then" showcases this delicate balance, though McCartney has expressed measured concern about impacts on emerging artists. Hip-hop may serve as a compelling case study for understanding how AI might integrate with human creativity in the music industry. The genre’s history of sampling and remixing makes it particularly well-suited for AI experimentation, and hip-hop artists have already begun exploring AI tools for production, beatmaking, and creative collaboration.

Early steps in video

While some early AI video experiments reveal current limitations, companies are racing to improve the technology. TCL's release of AI-generated short films on TCLtv Plus provides a transparent look at both the promise and challenges. Meanwhile, Pika Labs' latest video generation model introduces sophisticated capabilities around motion and scene composition. Instagram's planned transition from AR filters to AI-powered video modification in 2025 signals growing confidence in the technology's potential for everyday creative use.

The consumer reality check

Not all early applications are resonating equally. Recent Nielsen research indicates consumers can readily identify AI-generated video advertising and often respond negatively, describing such content as disconnected and unengaging. This suggests successful integration of AI creativity may require a more nuanced approach focused on augmenting human capabilities rather than wholesale replacement.

Looking ahead

As we enter 2025, several key questions remain: How will creative industries establish frameworks to protect artist rights while enabling innovation? What new forms of artistic expression might emerge from human-AI collaboration? The explosion of AI across the creative landscape doesn't necessarily mean the end of human artistry. Rather, as Laurie Simmons' Times Square installation demonstrates, it may enable bold new forms of expression when thoughtfully applied.
