The race to put AI models on your phone
Google's Gemini and OpenAI's GPT-4 may dominate headlines, but another AI battleground is already in your pocket. Meta has made a surprising leap forward by releasing compressed versions of their Llama models that can run directly on smartphones, achieving up to 4x faster performance while using 56% less space than their original versions.
The New Mobile Frontier
The development marks a significant departure from the cloud-based AI that currently powers most applications. By optimizing their models specifically for mobile devices and partnering with chip manufacturers like Qualcomm and MediaTek, Meta is bypassing traditional platform gatekeepers and potentially democratizing access to AI technology across the mobile ecosystem.
This technical achievement isn't just about making models smaller - it's about fundamentally changing how we interact with AI. Running models directly on phones could enhance privacy, reduce latency, and enable AI features to work without an internet connection.
A market-reality check
But there's a catch. Despite the tech industry's enthusiasm for mobile AI, consumers seem less convinced. Recent survey data shows that only 10% of smartphone owners currently use AI features like photo editing, and a mere 14% express excitement about future AI capabilities. Instead, 61% of users prioritize battery life when considering upgrades, while 46% focus on storage capacity.
The Platform Play
Meta's strategy here is noteworthy for several reasons. Unlike Apple's secretive approach or Google's selective releases, Meta is open-sourcing their compressed models. This move could accelerate the development of mobile AI applications and challenge the traditional app store dynamics that have dominated mobile computing for the past decade.
Looking ahead
For developers: The availability of efficient, open-source models creates new opportunities to build AI-powered applications without depending on cloud services or dealing with API costs.
For businesses: Organizations should start considering how on-device AI might enable new products or services, particularly in situations where privacy or internet connectivity are concerns.
For consumers: While AI features might not be driving purchase decisions yet, the integration of more efficient AI could improve basic smartphone functions without compromising battery life or performance.

In this episode, the hosts Anthony Batt and Shane Robinson with guest Joe Veroneau from Conveyor discuss outsmarting paperwork. Conveyor is a company that helps automate security reviews and document sharing between companies. They use AI technology, specifically language models, to automate the process of filling out security questionnaires. This saves customers a significant amount of time and improves the quality of their responses.
